Connacht MFC: Tribesmen win, but lose their shorts
May 10, 2010
New York may have come close to shocking Galway in last Sunday's Connacht SFC clash, but there was never any danger of their minors causing an upset in a one-sided ESB Connacht MFC first round clash at Pearse Stadium last night.
Galway 5-18
New York 1-3
So one-sided was this contest that the biggest talk point was the exchange of shorts, as well as jerseys, by both sets of players at the end of the game. Galway football secretary Seamus O'Grady said that their players were given special dispensation to swap gear with their counterparts from the Big Apple.
"It was the sense of occasion," he said.
"Like most counties, usually we would not swap jerseys after a game but an exception was made last night in light of the fact that it was New York and it was such an occasion. Most of these players will probably never meet again."
Making their first appearance in Salthill since 1982, New York were hit for four goals in the opening half and trailed by 1-1 to 4-9 at half-time. The Galway goal-scorers were Conor Rabbitte, Peadar O Griofam, Fiach O'Bearra and Thomas Flynn.
Things got worse for New York four minutes after the restart when Niall Quinn's attempted point deceived their goalkeeper and ended up in the net for a fifth Galway goal.
