Big day for clubs
May 10, 2009
La na gClub will be celebrated by over 2,500 GAA clubs around the world today.
The GAA has designated May 10 as 'Day of the Club' as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations and has encouraged every club to use their premises for the enjoyment of their members in a non-competitive and inclusive way.
Some clubs have already kicked off their celebrations with various events, such as ceilis and quiz nights, being held over the past two days. For most clubs, the celebrations will begin in earnest this morning with Mass for deceased members, followed by a parade to the GAA pitch by all club members.
All GAA pitches will be a hive of activity this afternoon with internal underage and adult matches being played. Many clubs have also organised charity matches, in some cases, against neighbouring clubs.
As part of the celebrations, clubs are also being encouraged to raise the special 125 flag, while plaque unveilings, tree planting and time capsule ceremonies have also been recommended. Some clubs also plan to turn their clubhouse into a museum of GAA artefacts for the day.
Rounders, handball, puc fada and kick fada competitions are also set to feature prominently on what promises to be a momentous day for the GAA's grassroots.
