Feeney calls for all-American team
March 04, 2009
Mayo secretary Sean Feeney has called for an all-American selection to replace New York in the Connacht senior football championship.
New York have become accustomed to heavy first round defeats in recent years, leading to question marks over their participation in the provincial championship. But while Feeney is not looking for the Exiles to be excluded from the championship, he believes an all-American team would be much more competitive.
"It is more of a showpiece now. They want to make it competitive, maybe they can look at an amalgamation of New York and all the different areas - an all-American team perhaps," he suggested.
"Down through the years, the clubs in America and England looked after the players that went abroad quite a lot. These occasions mean quite a lot to them because it is a social occasion as well as being a championship game.
"I'd be reluctant to pull the plug on anything like that. It's payback time for what the clubs over there have done in the past - looking after players."
It's estimated that Mayo will spend EUR75,000 on flying their senior footballers to the Big Apple for their Connacht SFC opener against the Exiles on May 10.
