Dolan back but Mayo win

January 20, 2008
Frankie Dolan may have made his return to a Roscommon jersey but it was not enough to lift his side as Mayo claimed a six point Connacht FBD FL win at Ballinlough. Mayo 2-14 Roscommon 2-8 John O'Mahony's men were livelier throughout and had already assumed a four point advantage thanks in part to the excellence of Alan Dillon before Dolan grabbed Roscommon's first score of the game at the end of the first quarter. Dillon again and James Gill stretched Mayo's advantage to 0-6 to 0-1 and although the home side pegged on a point Mayo soon had the first goal of the game on the board. Some hesitancy in the Ross defence allowed Michael Mullins in and he had no problem firing past Mark Miley. To their credit Roscommon replied immediately with a goal of their own as Jonathon Dunning made the half time deficit just four points, 1-2 to 1-6. A second Dunning goal on the restart seemed to signal a revival for the home side but Mayo had enough craft up front to create the crucial scoring chances that they needed. Three successive points had the red and greens 1-9 to 2-2 ahead before Dunning grabbed a point back for the home side. Then came the crucial score of the half as Brian Benson grabbed a goal to put Mayo six points ahead, an advantage they held until the final whistle.
