Grehan is Footballer of the Year
December 06, 2001
A memorable weekend for Francie Grehan culminated in him being named Roscommon Footballer of the Year at the Roscommon Supporters Club annual dinner in the CityWest Hotel, Dublin on Saturday night last.
An Allstar recipient at the same venue the previous night, Grehan was a popular choice as Footballer of the Year after his heroic performances for Roscommon throughout the year.
Ann Marie Carley was named as the Ladies Footballer of the Year while Tomás Lennon received the hurling award. Guest of honour was Four Roads hurling club member and St. Aidan's club official Phonsie Tully.
Fergal O'Donnell, who led Roscommon to their first Connacht championship success in 10 years last July, took the opportunity to express his disappointment at the fact that the county did not get to play in Croke Park.
"It's a disgrace that players who have trained in the mud and dirt of the winter can't be allowed to participate in big games. The GAA have to look into it," he said.
