Roscommon's captain fantastic
April 05, 2002
All Star Francie Grehan is captain of one of the most exciting teams in gaelic football at the moment and he is enjoying every minute of it.
Last year brought great success for Grehan and co with the winning of the Connacht title and he reckons the primrose and blues could surpass that achievement this summer.
"Last year in the League semi-final we were only starting out and John Tobin had a lot of work to do with us at the time," remarked Grehan. "We're more confident this year and the players are wiser. We want to win every game and the bigger the games the better.
"I'm enjoying my role as captain and it's great to be involved with a team that is playing well. We've set ourselves goals for the year and we're determined to achieve them."
He continued: "It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to finish top of this Division and the team deserves huge credit. It hurt us a bit last year when people said that we qualified for the semi-finals by default.
"The perception might be that for a small county, what happened last year was a once off. However, we've shown guts, determination and character in every game this year and I would have tremendous admiration for everybody associated with the team and of course the players themselves."
