Roscommon SFC: Castlerea retain title
September 28, 2009
Former county star Nigel Dineen produced a man of the match performance as Castlerea/St. Kevin's retained their Roscommon SFC crown with a four-point win over first-time finalists Western Gaels at Dr Hyde Park.
Castlerea/St. Kevin's0-10
Western Gaels0-6
In a disappointing final which saw Western Gaels kick twice as many wides as the champions (10-5), Dineen shone like a beacon. The Castlerea captain opened the scoring after six minutes and further scores from free-taker Ger Heneghan extended the winners' lead before Derek Moran finally opened the Gaels' account in the 19th minute.
Points from Enda Kenny and David Scahill pushed Castlerea 0-6 to 0-2 in front at the interval, and they managed to keep the Gaels at arm's length throughout the second half. Heneghan and Dineen both converted chances to cancel out efforts from Moran and Kevin Higgins as Castlerea put titles back-to-back.
Their next outing will be in the Connacht club championship against the Sligo champions.
