Roscommon SFC final: Dineen rescues Castlerea
October 13, 2008
Castlerea captain and former county star Nigel Dineen came to his side's rescue when he scored a point four minutes into stoppage-time to salvage a draw against Padraig Pearses in Kiltoom.
Castlerea St. Kevin's.0-12
Padraig Pearses.....1-9
The title looked to be heading to Woodmount for the first time until Dineen fisted over the equaliser to send the final to a replay. Amazingly, Castlerea looked to have the game won when they led 0-11 to 0-7 with six minutes of normal-time remaining, but in a blistering four-minute spell, a goal from Paul Duke, which was scored between points from Seanie Fahy and corner back Derek Whyte had put Pearses ahead before Dineen saved the day for Castlerea.
The first half was a poor quality affair, at the end of which Castlerea led by 0-5 to 0-4. The accuracy of county star Ger Heneghan - who top-scored with 0-8 - was the main reason Castlerea led at the break.
The second half was much more exciting as Castlerea upped the tempo to power into a 0-11 to 0-7 lead after 53 minutes. But after Pearses hit them for 1-2 late on, they were mightily relieved to get a second chance.
