Simonstown caught cold

Simonstown's Wayne McCarthy
Simonstown Gaels suffered a defeat at the hands of Walterstown in their opening Commons Hardware SFC Group B game played in Seneschalstown on Sunday.
Simonstown Gaels 0-8
Walterstown 2-7
The north Navan side registered only four first-half points, all coming from the boot of corner forward, Wayne McCarthy. Mid-way through the first-half, Walterstown's Joe Goeghegan latched onto a handling error in the Simonstown full back line and calmly dispatched it, helping his side to a deserved first half lead. Simonstown trailed the Blacks by a goal at the interval, 1-4 to 0-4.
The introduction of promising youngster Stephen Moran lifted the Gaels temporarily. However, a Ray Reynolds goal for Walterstown, following a comedy of errors mid-way through the second half, put Simonstown even further in arrears.
Simonstown had to depend on the ever reliable McCarthy to chip over frees to keep them in contention, and a late Michael O'Rourke point proved little consolation as Walterstown ran out facile victors.
Simonstown will have to improve greatly on this opening performance if they are to progress in this years championship.
