After hitting the post and crossbar three times, Rathkenny will feel that they let this game slip as the went down by four points to Summerhill in the opening SFC game played in Bohermeen last Friday evening, April 25th.

Rathkenny started brightly and were ahead after David Donegan's second minute point. After Summerhill levelled matters, Brian Meade saw his punched effort come back off the crossbar to safety on ten minutes. With scores at a premium, it became a tit for tat battle, with Rathkenny scores from Derick Smith and Thomas Martin answered by the Summerhill men, before they went in front for the first time two minutes before the break. Rathkenny also seeing a David Donegan effort crashing off the crossbar.
Summerhill opened the second half with a point followed by a goal within two minutes to extend the lead to five points. Rathkenny hit the post again and followed this up with two wides. Summerhill extended the lead to six shortly afterwards, before a Darren Barron effort reduced the lead. A brace of scores had Summerhill in a commanding seven point lead with twelve minutes to go. Rathkenny dug deep and were rewarded when after a great save by John Martin, Rathkenny were awarded a penalty 60 seconds later after sub Tom Rowan was upended in the square. Rowan scored from the spot and when Brian Meade popped over a point, the deficit was down to three points with eight minutes left on the clock. Summerhill steadied the ship with a point three minutes later to which Rathkenny responded through a Darren Barron free. Summerhill closed out the game with a point in the third minute of stoppage time.
