Cian Ward was outstanding for Wolfe Tones
A late free from the boot of Cian Ward ensured the points were shared between Wolfe Tones and Navan O'Mahony's in this entertaining first round SFC clash before a large attendance in Simonstown. Wolfe Tones 1-11 Navan O Mahony's 1-11 O Mahonys started at a blistering pace and rattled over two early points before blasting to the net on seven minutes to lead 1-02 to 0-00 with the Tones defence unable to cope. Tones got right back into the match when Alan Fox fielded superbly and laid off to the inrushing Niall McLoughlin who blasted high to the net in the 11th minute. O Mahonys pointed then Ward got off the mark after good work from McGrath, Fox quickly added another and a superb 55 yard free from Ward levelled the sides on 17 minutes. Two more strikes from Ward edged Tones in front but O Mahony's finished the half stronger and went in 1-06 to 1-05 up. Tones were level again through Ward after Sheppard was fouled in the opening minute and he continued to torment the O Mahony's defence by adding the next three points to give Tones a 1-09 to 1-06 lead after 47 minutes. O Mahony's opened their second half account on 49 minutes from a free and then Ward fired over another stunning point from distance on the sideline. O Mahonys pushed hard and by the 58th minute were level. A harsh free awarded against Tones was then brought forward and when it went over the bar it looked like O Mahony's would steal victory but in the last minute Niall McLoughlin's surging run was stopped illegally and Ward pointed to secure what was a fairest result for both sides. Best for Tones were Niall McLoughlin, Corrigan, Tiernan and Ward with a tally of 10 points. Wolfe Tones - David Nolan; Richie Brady, C.
