Castletown deservedly got the better of neighbours Drumconrath 0-11 to 0-7 in their Meath IFC clash at Nobber on Tuesday evening, August 1st. This was a game dominated by a strong wind which blew down from the village end of the grounds. Drumconrath had first advantage and with the elements at their strongest for the hour, the men in red with Leighton Irwin to the fore, surged 0-4 to 0-1 clear at the end of the opening quarter. This advantage could have been greater but a number of the losers players tended to go it alone and shot when a colleague was much better placed. The Castletown bench moved Mick Hickey from full forward to mid field and with Kevin Barry picking up a lot of ball around this sector, the eventual winners came much more into the game and were full value for their narrow interval deficit of 0-5 to 0-4. They soon levelled matters on the turnover and edged in front. But any ideas of a comfortable run in were knocked on the head as Drumconrath, with keeper Sean Kane and full back Pete McMahon along with Terry Skelly, a Meath minor during 2005 in outstanding form, defended heroically and Castletown were made to fight for every shot at goals. It was a 2006 Meath minor though, who stole the show. Barry Smith and James Finnerty likewise gave their immediate markers a torrid time but a couple of inspirational points from county corner back Gerry Farrelly, who started at number 7 but who pushed up the field, finally broke Drumconrath hearts.
