Sheridan shoots down the 'Lough
August 08, 2005
Cathal Sheridan outscored the opposition on his own with 1-8 as Summerhill easily disposed of a feeble Ballinlough challenge in this Navan Shopping Centre SFC clash at Athboy on Saturday evening.
Summerhill 2-12
Ballinlough 1-5
Sheridan missed his side's defeat by Dunboyne in the previous round through injury and made an early impression when fisting a Maurice Kennedy pass to the Ballinlough in the second-minute.
The young midfielder was outstanding and his trademark forward burst created the opening for the veteran attacker who managed two other scores from play.
Summerhill were never subsequently reeled and in posting their second win of the campaign give themselves a great chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
Not even the dismissal of centre-back Willie Milner on the receipt of a second yellow card in the run up to half-time seriously dented their hopes.
At that point it was 1-4 to 0-3 with Gary Rispin, Damien Byrne, Paul Rispin and Sheridan again adding to the Summerhill total.
Ballinlough's return came from two Kevin Devine frees and a well worked effort from wing-back Ronan McGuinness. Devine spent a lot of time around midfield leaving his side without an effective target man in attack.
Peader Byrne lined out in the middle along side his brother Seamus and while the county man saw a lot of the ball in the early stages he allowed himself get increasingly frustrated as the game went away from Ballinlough.
His only point cut the deficit to a goal in the 29th minute but that was soon countered by Sheridan's first score from a free to leave it 1-5 to 0-4 at the break.
Within twenty seconds of the resumption the margin was down to three points as Peader Byrne and Conor Maguire combined to set Dan McCartan up for a point.
Summerhill responded with two pointed frees from Sheridan before McCartan briefly lifted Ballinlough hopes when fisting a Peader Byrne centre to the net in the 41st minute.
Barry Smith shot badly wide shortly after and Summerhill finished with 1-5 without reply with Maurice Kennedy getting their second goal in the 46th minute when fisting a Sheridan pass to the net.
Ballinlough had Ronan McGuinness sent off on receipt of his second yellow card shortly after being re-introduced as a sub for Padraig Muldoon.
