Syddan advance to quarter finals
July 25, 2005
Syddan's scoring power overcame a plucky Rathkenny in this Intermediate clash played in Castletown last Sunday.
Syddan 1-15
Rathkenny 1-07
The winners aided by a strong breeze in the opening half started much the better by registering five points in the opening ten minutes. Darren Barron scored Rathkenny's first point on two minutes. Peadar Farrelly added their second point with a free on ten minutes. Rathkenny got themselves back on level terms on 14 minutes when a high ball into the Syddan goalmouth caused panic for the defence, and David Donegan was quickest to react, slotting the ball to the net. Michael Macken then scored a great point on 16 minutes to put Rathkenny in front for the only time of the match.
Two points from Syddan put them back in front before a Farrelly free on 22 minutes tied the contest once again. Syddan took control for the remainder of the half, winning most breaking ball in the centre of the pitch and adding three unanswered points to leave it 0-10 to 1-4 at the interval.
Rathkenny needed to score first in the second half, but it was Syddan who were quickest out of the blocks and two frees in the first two minutes left them 0-12 to 1-4 in front. Rathkenny worked hard to try and get back into the game and with points from Farrelly and Brian Meade reduced the gap by the 40th minute. However a Darren Barron score on 50 minutes was to be their final score, by which time Syddan had added a further three points. Syddan finished with a goal on 54 minutes, which referree Jim Smith gave after consulting with his umpire on whether or not it was a square ball.
Best for Rathkenny were Ronan Martin, Donal Curtis, Brian Meade, Darren Barron and Peadar Farrelly
