Duleek earn knockout spot
July 21, 2003
Duleek ensured their place into the IFC quarter-finals as group winners as they overcame Donaghmore/Ashbourne in Skryne on Saturday evening 19th July.
Duleek 4-07
Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-05
It was a comfortable win for the Duleek side but they must be concerned with their accuracy in front of goal as the number of wides totalled fifteen by the final whistle.
With Duleek picking up the early breaks around the middle of the field, they had plenty of possession and with two early goals by Damien O'Halloran and Donard Ferguson, Donaghmore were facing an uphill battle to get back into the game.
Full-forward Colin Duignan showed well for the incoming ball and was rewarded with two first-half points. Donaghmore fought well in the first-half but tenacious defending by the Duleek backs restricted the Dublin-border side to just two points.
Half time: Duleek 2-04 Donaghmore 0-02
Donaghmore started well in the second half, but their finishing also, let them down. With substitute Daire Ferguson coming on in the second half and shooting 1-01, it looked as if Duleek were the team going to be picking up the two points. Karl McDonnell who had a fine game in midfield finished the game off by blasting a left-foot shot to the back of the net to give Duleek the deserved victory.
