Fantastic Na Fianna

April 08, 2002
Na Fianna caused a major upset when they defeated Navan O'Mahony's in Trim Saturday evening last in the first round of the B. Farrelly Construction IFC. Na Fianna 2-06 Navan O'Mahony's 2-05 Na Fianna got off to the perfect start with a point from Martin Flynn inside the first few minutes. O'Mahony's then drew level with a free before a Paul Hanley free put Na Fianna in the lead again. Na Fianna, playing against the wind, produced the better football in the first half, but were unable to make their domination show on the scoreboard. Another Hanley free left the score three points to one but then two more frees from O'Mahony's levelled the scores at half time. Na Fianna started the second half off at a phenomenal pace and within five minutes. Paul Hanley had registered 2-1 to put Na Fianna into a commanding lead. O'Mahony's then proceeded to dominate the game, but were finding it very hard to break down a resolute Na Fianna defence. A point from Martin Hanley seemed to put Na Fianna on their way but a goal from O'Mahony's threw the game wide open again. Paul Hanley then scored his fourth point, to put Na Fianna five up with only minutes remaining. In the closing minutes, O'Mahony's laid siege to the Na Fianna goal and managed another goal and a point in that period. But it was too little too late and Na Fianna held out for a much deserved, if unlikely victory. Paul Hanley was fabulous for the winners as was Martin Flynn, Alan Clinton, Eamon Regan and Tomas Cosgrave. Na Fianna - O. Lewis, E. Regan, G. Greville, C Cosgrave, F. Foran, C. O'Rafferty, T Cosgrave, J Hendricks, D Griffin, A Clinton, M Hanley (0-01R. MacMahon, E McCloskey, M. Flynn (0-01), P Hanley (2-04). Subs - B Hyland for MacMahon.
