SFC: Queeney rescues point for Na Fianna
April 28, 2014
Na Fianna's Michael Farley
Na Fianna 2-9
St Pats 3-6
Na Fianna snatched a draw with two Dan Queeney points in injury time at the end of a rather disjointed display from the south Meath side who came up against a well organised and determined Stamullen outfit at sunny Ashbourne on Sunday evening.
Na Fianna started brightly with a Jamie Queeney 45 within the first minute. St Pats responded with a goal and a point of their own ,Queeney added 2 further 45's on the 13th and 16th minute but between these 2 scores there was drama in both goal mouths .Firstly a St Pats midfielder ran straight through the Na Fianna defence and scored a cracking goal from 20 metres and from the resultant kick out Dalton McDonagh has a great goal scoring opportunity saved brilliantly by the Pats goalkeeper at the other end. Michael Farley kicked a point on 20 minutes but the East Meath side finished the half strongly adding another 1-1 to their tally to leave the half time score St Pats 3-2 Na Fianna 0-4.
Na Fianna opened the second half brightly with Conor Downey flicking the ball to the net following a great team move within the first minute. St Pats added 2 point and then on 10 minutes Ollie Lewis scored a goal to leave the score reading St Pats 3.4 Na Fianna 2.4. Further points by Shane Barrett and Downey and one point from Pats had just 2 point between the sides entering the final 15 minutes. When Dean Barrett blasted wide from a great goal scoring chance with 4 minutes left, many supporters in the large crowd present felt that Na Fianna's chance of salvaging something from this match was gone. Another Farley point was cancelled by a St Pats free at the other end. However in injury time Dan Queeney popped up with firstly a pointed free and then at the death curling over a final point from play to earn Na Fianna a draw and leave St Pats feeling robbed of the 2 championship points that their display on the night had probably deserved.
Best for Na Fianna who face Donaghmore/Ashbourne in Round 3 were Jamie Queeney, Conor Downey and Michael Farley.
