SFC: Tones ease past Oldcastle
April 28, 2014
Wolfe Tones Fiachra Ward has Oldcastle's Ronan Farrelly for company during the hoganstand.com Meath SFC game at Pairc Tailteann
Wolfe Tones 6-15
Oldcastle 1-14
A brilliant opening quarter left Wolfe Tones very much in the driving seat as by that stage they led 3-2 to 0-2.
They weren't flattered by this lead as on almost every attack a goal seemed likely. Their opening score came in the first minute courtesy of Brughach O Fionnagáin who finished off a move begun by Cian Ward who dispossessed an Oldcastle defender, passed to brother Fiachra who slipped it to O Fionnagain who gave the keeper no chance from close range. Oldcastle replied with a point. Niall O Reilly added a Tones point shortly afterwards before Cian Ward notched his first goal of the afternoon. Almost immediately Fiachra Ward bore down on goal only to see his goal effort cannon out wide off the upright. Shortly afterward Brughach O Fionnagáin brought a fine save from the Oldcastle keeper, Niall Mc Loughlin scored a point from the rebound. The pressure on the Oldcastle rear guard paid off again shortly afterwards when Fiachra Ward got inside the Oldcastle defence and beat the keeper with a low drive. Paddy Gilsenan replied with a pointed free.
Oldcastle added a point which was matched by a Cian Ward free after a foul on O Fionnagáin. Tones extended their lead again with a long range Cian Ward point before good attacking play yielded a goal for Oldcastle. Tones 3-04 Oldcastle 1-03 after 20 minutes. Oldcastle who were playing against the wind were still in it. Tones dominated the next period but only had 2 Niall Mc Loughlin points to show for it. Cian Ward hit 2 wides in this period and Ciaran Mc Loughlin was unlucky to see his shot go narrowly wide when through on goal. Oldcastle added 2 further points to leave the score 3 06 to 1 05 as half time approached. However when Tones scored 2 goals one from Cian Ward and one from Fiachra Ward in the closing minutes of the half the issue seemed to be settled. Half time score Tones 5- 06 Oldcastle 1-07.
Tones' 6 points in the opening 13 minutes of the 2nd half, 3 from Cian Ward added to points from Alan Callaghan, Niall O Reilly and Niall Mc Loughlin ensured there was no chance of an Oldcastle comeback as they now led by 5 12 to 1 09. Oldcastle to their credit never gave up and scored some fine points with the aid of the breeze but could not get through the Tones defence for the all-important goals they needed to get back in the game. Tones did manage a goal from veteran Ciaran Mc Loughlin in the 20th minute, who collected a pass from brother Niall to fire to the net.
