Rathkenny started off their 2014 Meath HoganStand.com Senior Championship campaign with a hard fought ten point win over St Patricks Stamullen in blustery Seneschalstown last Sunday afternoon, April 13th.
The Stamullen men played with the aid of the very strong breeze in the opening half, but it was the men from Rathkenny who opened the scoring with a fine Jack Gore free on two minutes. The Stamullen men sent over the next two points with scores at a premium in the opening quarter hour as both teams struggled to deal with the conditions. On seventeen minutes, John Donegan was hauled down in the square and Jack Gore calmly slotted home the resultant penalty. St Pats again sent over a brace of points to level matters on twenty minutes. Rathkenny captain Ivan Lenehan popped over Rathkennys final first half score five minutes before the interval. St Pats once again levelled matters with a free on 29 minutes to leave it 1-2 to 0-5 at the break.
Rathkenny upped the tempo in the second half and got a great start with John Donegan getting on the end of a centre to net. Stephen Crosbie sent over a great point on 37 minutes to extend the gap to four. Donal Curtis followed up with a fine score of his own and Rathkenny led by five on 39 minutes.
Stephen Crosbie drilled to the net on the three quarter mark to leave eight between the teams enter the last quarter. Late scores from Ivan Lenehan and substitute Caolach Halligan left the final score 3-06 to 0-5
