November 17, 2013

Wolfe Tones minors celebrate
Wolfe Tones 2-09
Rathkenny 1-07

A very good opening 20 minutes from the Tones saw them build up a nine point lead on a score line of 2-03 to 0-00, the Tones scores coming from Padraig Diamond (1-00), Thomas O'Reilly (1-01), Brughach O Fionnagain (0-01) and Niall O Reilly (0-01).

Although the opening exchanges were evenly contested Tones backboned by Robert White, Daniel O'eill, Conor Sheppard and Adrian Sheridan in the Tones defence frustrated many Rathkenny attacks. Niall O Reilly and Charlie Mc Garry dominated the midfield exchanges, while Thomas O Reilly and Brughach O Fionnagain tormented the Rathkenny defence. Rathkenny gained parity around midfield towards the end of the half and managed 2 points to leave the half time score 2 03 to 0 02.

Both teams were rather wasteful in attack the Tones registering 7 first half wides to Rathkenny's 5.

5 Tones points in the opening ten minutes of the second half, 4 from Thomas O Reilly and 1 from Luke Sheridan to 2 from Rathkenny gave Wolfe Tones the comfort of a 2 08 to 0 04 lead. Rathkenny sensing the game slipping away from them rallied and added 2 points from play and a goal direct from a 45. Three wides in this period blunted their comeback attempt and Tones held on for a comfortable victory. Conor Sheppard raiding from corner back added a further point for the Tones. Niall O Reilly accepted the Daire Maxwell memorial cup from Elaine Maxwell on behalf of Wolfe Tones.
