A point with virtually the last kick of the game from Caoimhin King was enough to see Dunshaughlin gain a vital win over neighbours Dunboyne in this tense hoganstand Group C SFC game at Dunsany. Surprise packets Na Fianna top the group on 6 points with Dunboyne, Dunshaughlin, Simonstown and Wolfe Tones close behind on four.
Dunshaughlin were the better team for long stages in the first half. The first time high ball into full forward Joe O'Brien was giving St Peters all sorts of problems. O'Brien opened the scoring with a point from a 45 before Eoin Hegarty extended their advantage. Jason Daly got Dunboyne off the mark. Cathal O'Dwyer and David Geaney exchanged points before O'Dwyer and the best point of the game from Niall Kelly pushed Dunshaughlin 0-5 to 0-2 ahead after 15 minutes. Paddy Christies men hit four answered points, O'Dwyer 3 and Kelly between the 15th and 25th minute to give Dunshaughlin a commanding 0-9 to 0-3 lead. Two pointed frees from Kerry native Geaney brought Dunboyne closer at the break. Half time score Dunshaughlin 0-9 Dunboyne 0-5.
St Peters chances of a fight back took a turn for the worse when midfielder David Gallagher was sent off for a second yellow offence by referee Cormac Reilly on the stroke of half time.
Despite been a man down Dunboyne played with more determination in the second half. Geaney, who was a problem all day for the Dunshaughlin defence kicked over two great scores in the opening five minutes. Fergus Toolan and O'Dwyer replied for Dunshaughlin. Colin Clarke and Geaney exchanged points with Hegarty and O"Dwyer and with ten minutes left Dunshaughlin still had that four point advantage. Geaney landed his 7th point before Donal Lenihan broke through for the games only goal and the sides were level with five left on the clock. Man of the match O'Dwyer put Dunshaughlin back in front only for Jason Daly to tie the match again. With time running out and a draw on the cards Dunshaughlin broke up field and Caoimhin King who was playing in the full back line at this stage got on the end of above to send the ball over the bar a give Dunshaughlin a much needed win.
The winners now play Blackhall in their final game while Dunboyne play Wolfe Tones and Simonstown take on Na Fianna to decide the outcome of this group.
