IFC: Na Fianna edge out Longwood
June 13, 2011
Na Fianna's Jamie Queeney
Na Fianna 0-14
Longwood 1-9
Na Fianna continued their 100% record in the Intermediate Championship when they defeated Longwood in Trim on Sunday.
This was an eagerly awaited local derby, following Longwood's victory in the similar fixture last year. The game was tough with no quarter asked or given. Despite playing against a strong breeze in the first half Longwood opened the scoring and had the majority of the play in the opening 15 minutes and were all square with Na Fianna on 0-2 - the two Na Fianna points coming from Jamie Queeney. As the half wore on the Enfield/ Baconstown lads began to dominate the defense to hold Longwood scoreless for the remainder of the half while two excellent Mick Foley points, three further points from Queeney and a Harrison Silke point left Na Fianna leading 0-8 to 0-2 at half time.
Na Fianna started the second half in fine fashion with quick points from Ollie Lewis and Conor Downey before Aaron Ennis opened Longwood's second half account. To further Queeney points and a Silke point left Na Fianna leading 0-13 to 0-3 with ten minutes to go. However excellent play by Mickey Burke, Rory Maguire and Damien Healy saw Longwood score 1-3 without reply to leave a goal between the teams as the game entered the last five minutes. A Daniel Queeney point eased the Na Fianna nerves but Longwood never gave up and scored the final two points. The Na Fianna lads were relieved to hear the final whistle to record their third victory in the competition on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-9.
With Jamie Queeney scoring 0-7 of Na Fianna's 0-14 he was the most influential player on the field and he was well assisted by Michael Foley, Ollie Lewis, Johnny Baldwin and Christy and Tommy Cosgrove.
Na Fianna: Shane Geraghty, Davy Lyons, Christy Cosgrave, Tommy Cosgrave, John Baldwin, Dean Henrick, Eoin Murray, Ollie Lewis (0-1), Brian Queeney; Dean Barrett; Michael Foley (0-2); Conor Downey (0-1); Daniel Queeney (0-1), Jamie Queeney (0-7) Harrison Silke (0-2).
