SFC: Rathkenny defeat champions to go top

Rathkenny defeated Meath Senior champions Seneschalstown by a single point in this Group A Senior Football Championship match played in sunny Simonstown last Sunday afternoon.

The men in red and black confounded all the pre-match experts with resolute defending and cool finishing under pressure. Rathkenny's Richie Timmons finished the game with five points aided by John Donegan and Brian Meade with a brace apiece.

Rathkenny went into an early two point lead with scores from Donegan and Timmons. Seneschalstown brought the game level with scores on eight and nine minutes. Timmons edged Rathkenny back in front for Seneschalstown to level matters again a minute later. It was tit for tat for the remainder of the half with the champions edging it by 0-6 to 0-5. Timmons ended the half with four points for Rathkenny.

Seneschalstown widened the gap to two, eight minutes after the restart. Rathkenny then popped over three unanswered points to open up a one point lead with scores from Brain Meade (2) and Richie Timmons. Seneschalstown were down to fourteen men after a red card but Seneschalstown levelled matters with a 24th minute point but John Donegan fielded a high centre to kick over the winning score. Seneschalstown were guilty of two wides in the closing stages to draw level, but Rathkenny held on to secure the two points.
