IFC: Cortown through, Moynalvey out
September 20, 2009
Cortown's Glen Loughran
Cortown 2- 13
Moynalvey 1 -10
Led by a magnificent display by Glen Loughran, ably assisted at centre field by John Fagan Cortown turned over a double scores deficit from half time to run out clear winners in this IFC game against Moynalvey.
It was a ''Knockout'' game as the winners progressed to the playoffs and the losers must wait until next year. Cortown started strongly but missed a goal and a poiont in the first two minutes. Moynalvey took over and scored 4 points from play in their first 4 attacks, 3 being punched over by quick thinking corner forwards. Cortown eventually got off the mark with a Gary Coyne point in the 13th minute, but they were finding it diffiocult to master the quick moving Moynalvey forwards. When Cathal Sheridan put 7 between the teams with a goal froma penalty in the 27th minute it was looking good for the men in maroon. However 2 late points from Glen Loughran and Gary Coyne gave Cortown some hope.
Cortown came out for the second half with determination and Brian Casserly scored a point and then a smashing goal within 2 minutes. When Gary Coyne levelled in the 3rd minute it looked good for Cortown. However Moynalvey got their noses in front by 2 again and never stopped trying. Cortown however had the scent of victory and took over with Gordon Codds goal after a 60 yard solo run by substitute Colm Kerrigan in the 20th minute confirming their superiority.
The dominance of Cortowns centrefielders coupled by their resurgent forwards in th 2nd half was matched by a tight backline which restricted Moynalvey to 3 points in this period. If the winners can produce similiar form in the upcoming playoffs they could reach the Final for the second year in succession.
