September 16, 2009
Kilmainhamwood's Damien Cunningham and Moynalvey's Brian Gilsenan fight for possession during the Meath IFC at Pairc Tailteann
Moynalvey 0-11
Kilmainhamwood 2-5
Moynalvey overcame a five point half time deficit to ensure they gained a valuable point against Kilmainhamwood in this IFC game played under lights in Pairc Tailteann on Tuesday night 15th September.
Kilmainhamwood raced into a five point lead within 8 minutes as Ray Magee pointed free which was followed by nice move from the Wood with a David Russell goal. Stephen Kiernan scored a point from play to open the gap further.
The men in maroon and white eventually found their feet in the 10th minute when Cathal Sheridan found the range from a free kick. Moynalvey tagged on a further 3 points through frees from the accurate boot of Sheridan to leave just a point between the sides with only 5 minutes of the half remaining. However they missed the chance to go ahead, when a superb ball in from Sheridan resulted in David Donoghue being fouled in the area, only for Sheridan to send the resulting penalty wide of the target. Kilmainhamwood then hit Moynalvey with a sucker punch when Russell pointed before half Back Michael Shankey then scored a goal after a good build up for the 'Wood to leave five points between the teams, 2-3 to 0-4.
While Kilmainhamwood added the first point of the second half from a Kiernan free, Moynalvey dug deep and emerged from the dressing room determined to close the gap, drawing the scores level in the 49th minute after adding six points without response, 3 frees along with 2 pointed efforts from play from veteran Sheridan, added by a Stephen Donoghue point from play. With only 7 minutes remaining on the clock Kilmainhamwood looked to have sealed matters when Shankey foraged forward to kick the lead point.
However top scorer Sheridan still had something to say on the matter when landing a monstrous '45 in the 55th minute leaving the scores tied once again. With only seconds remaining on the clock Sheridan once again tried his luck from a placed ball from an almost impossible angle, which resulted in the ball being finished to the net only for the score to be disallowed for a square ball infringement.
Best performances for the men in maroon came from Paul Weldon, Robbie Kiernan, Padraig Donoghue, Brendan Dixon, John Donoghue and top scorer Sheridan.
Kilmainhamwoods best players were Damien Cunningham, Stephen Smith, Michael Shankey and Sean Mulligan.
