SFC: Tones slay Summerhill
June 15, 2009
Wolfe Tone's Eoghan Harrington
Wolfe Tones 1-12
Summerhill 1-09
Wolfe Tones took a step closer to qualifying for the knock out stages of this year's Senior football championship with a three point win over last year's beaten finalists Summerhill in Athboy on Sunday afternoon.
Summerhill started much the stronger and scored 1-01 in the first two minutes before Wolfe Tones scored. Alan Fox opened the scoring for the Tones on three minutes, some good pressure play by the Tones forwards dispossessing Summerhill. Niall McLoughlin added a nice point a minute later. Summerhill tagged on two more points on 5 and 8 minutes before there was a couple of minute's stoppage time to fix the net on the goals. This stoppage seemed to work in the Tones favour as they scored 3 minutes in the space of five minutes after that - Fox with a decent effort off the right boot, Darren McGrath adding the second, a move which involved Cian Ward and Eoghan Harrington. Ward registering the third with a free after Fox was fouled. Summerhill replied with a point on 20 minutes. Harrington fisted over another score 2 minutes after, a quick free by Ward onto Niall McLoughlin setting the opportunity up for Harrington. Ward equalised on 24 minutes with a point from another free, 21 yards out. Mark Coleman scored a point in injury time to give the Tones the minimum margin going in at half time.
Similar to the first half, Summerhill raced out of the blocks in the second, three points, 2 from frees, in the first 3 minutes put Summerhill back in the ascendency. Ward added another point from a free on 5 minutes when Alan Fox was fouled, Mark Coleman with a great pass into Fox. Ward landed another excellent point over the bar 3 minutes later after Harrington was fouled 40 yards out from goals. Tones were awarded a penalty on 39 minutes, a Summerhill back with a frontal charge into Gordon Beggy. Cian Ward stood up to the mark and converted it confidently low into the left corner of the goals. The next 15 minutes of the half were relatively quiet on the scoring front, Summerhill the only team to register, with two points in that period. Paul Byrne added a point on 56 mins, Mark Coleman once again with the pass. Cian Ward registered the last of his scores on the hour mark with another converted free after Corrigan was fouled to give the Tones a 3 point winning margin.
Best on the day for the Tones were Harrington, Fox, Mark Coleman and Ward.
