Historic first for Ballymahon

September 30, 2002
Ballymahon.......1-11 Clonguish...........0-12 Roscommon star Frankie Dolan was the star of the show as Ballymahon upset favourites Clonguish to capture their first Longford SFC title at Pearse Park on Sunday 29th September. Dolan, who only joined the south Longford club this year, scored all but three points of the winners' tally in a man of the match performance. Clonguish appeared to be on course for their expected win when they led by 0-9 to 0-4 early in the second half. But the game turned on its head when a defensive error allowed Dolan to score the only goal five minutes after the restart. With John O'Callaghan and Alan Hudson gaining the upperhand at midfield, Ballymahon were now playing with great confidence and they gradually broke down the Clonguish challenge. Dolan also fired over six points in what was an exciting second half, three of which were excellent efforts from play. A key factor in Ballymahon's success was the curbing of Clonguish's star forward Paul Barden who only managed one point from play.
