Longford SFC final: Barden rescues Clonguish
September 14, 2009
A late David Barden point earned Clonguish a 1-11 each draw with Dromard in the Longford SFC final at Pearse Park yesterday.
The replay has been fixed for September 27, but few in the large attendance would have expected the Newtownforbes side to earn another day out after they had played second fiddle for most of the first half.
Dromard captain Diarmuid Masterson shot over the bar with an empty net at his mercy at the end of the first quarter before a goal eventually materialised for the north Longford outfit in the 22nd minute with Francis McGee on target.
That gave Dromard a 1-6 to 0-4 lead, but they failed to score against until the 45th minute as Clonguish came storming back with five unanswered points per Ciaran Williams (three), Paul Barden and Paddy Dowd.
Team captain Paul Barden converted a penalty to help Clongiush to a 1-10 to 1-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining, but three points from McGee and another from Cian Mimnagh had Dromard ahead with time running out.
However, there was still enough time for David Barden to rescue a draw for Clonguish.
