Cork face Galway
August 11, 2008
The quarter-final draw for the 2008 TG4 All-Ireland ladies senior football championship has pitted reigning champions Cork against Galway, who sent former winners Laois crashing out of the competition on Saturday.
The Rebelettes, chasing a fourth successive crown, will start as favourites to advance to the semi-finals but Galway looked impressive against Laois on their way to a 2-15 to 0-10 victory. Leinster champions Dublin will tackle last year's beaten semi-finalists Tyrone, who overcame the challenge of Ulster rivals Armagh 3-9 to 1-8 in the second round of qualifiers. Last year's beaten finalists Mayo, the reigning Connacht champions, will take on Kerry, who defeated Down 1-14 to 3-6 at St Lomans, Mullingar on Saturday.
Ulster champions Monaghan have been pitted against Sligo, who ended Kildare's championship hopes with a 3-9 to 2-8 success in Mullingar. Sligo led by 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time as top-scorer Noelle Gormley, who finished with 1-4, struck for a 23rd minute goal to crown a fine passing move. Goals after the break from Siobhán O'Sullivan and Elicia Codd helped to open up a 3-8 to 0-5 advantage but Kildare hit back with goals from midfielders Noelle Earley and Elaine Dillon.
A nine-point deficit was cut back to three before O'Sullivan landed the insurance score for Sligo. In the second game at St Lomans, Mullingar, beaten Munster finalists Kerry accounted for Down to book a quarter-final meeting with Mayo. Goals from Aileen Pyers and Michela Downey had Kerry in trouble early on but a good run of points saw the Kingdom trail by just the bare minimum at half-time, 2-3 to 0-8.
Kerry equalised early in the second half but Down moved three points clear when Downey fisted her second goal six minutes after the restart. However, Kerry would not be denied and Debra Murphy's goal levelled the scores at the end of the third quarter - 1-9 to 3-3. Powered by player of the match Caroline Kelly in defence, Kerry found the crucial scores when they were needed to seal an impressive victory.
Galway recorded an eight-point victory against 2001 All-Ireland champions Laois but the dubious reward for this upset is a meeting with Cork. Substitute Lisa Coohill scored the crucial first half goal for Galway, just three minutes after coming on, to help establish a 1-4 to 0-5 interval lead for the Tribeswomen. Claire Hehir netted Galway's second goal eight minutes after half-time before Laois goalkeeper Bernie Deegan performed heroics with a superb double-save to deny the Westerners a third major. This game was followed by the much-anticipated Armagh v Tyrone clash, as the two sides clashed for the eighth time in just three years.
Tyrone centre forward Gemma Begley led the way with a superb attacking performance which yielded 2-3 and her 13th minute goal opened up a 1-1 to 0-1 lead. Shauna O'Hagan's 28th-minute goal for Armagh saw the Orchard girls lead by 1-6 to 1-4 at half-time but second half sin-binnings for O'Hagan and Aileen Matthews hurt Armagh badly. Nina Murphy took a pass from Begley to goal early in the second half before Begley added her second to effectively kill the game. Tyrone outscored Armagh 2-4 to 0-3 in the second half as Armagh were held scoreless for the last sixteen minutes of play.
