Clare minors fall to Kerry
April 10, 2006
Munster Minor Championship
Clare 2 - 1
Kerry 6 - 13
An understrength Clare ladies team were no match for a well drilled Kerry outfit in this opening round Munster Minor Championship game played in Miltown Malbay on Saturday 8th April.
To aspire to being competitive against teams the likes of Kerry or Cork Clare need to have the best players available for selection on the field of play. Sadly on Saturday several high ranked players failed to turn up for the match and this was a major disappointment to all connected with the team.
The final score line reflects Kerry's dominance of the game and from a very early stage Clare were chasing the game and trying to muster a damage limitation exercise. Credit to the Clare girls who took the field though as they tried as hard as possible to give a creditable performance for their team and county. Starting with a flourish Clare were unlucky not to register two early goals but once the Kingdom girls settled it was game over at an early stage as they raced into a 2 - 6 to 0 - 0 lead after 20 minutes. Clare finally opened their account with a 26th minute goal from Niamh Coyne however Kerry added another goal and a point before the break to leave the half time score at 3 - 7 to 1 - 0 in their favour.
On the resumption Kerry started where they left off and had another goal and five points scored before Stephanie Regan scored a point for Clare which was quickly followed by Clare's second goal from Aisling McCaw. This brief revival did not last long however as Kerry added a further 2 - 1 before the final whistle.
Best for Clare on the day were Laura Hanrahan, Fiona McMahon, Niamh Cavanagh, Eimear Greene, Lorraine Griffin and Niamh Coyne.
