Disappointment for AGB Minors in Cup Final
May 07, 2012
AGB Minor ladies took on Tinahely in the Minor A Cup final on Friday May 4th in Pearse Park. Tinahely were fastest out of the blocks as the Arklow side took time to settle. Tinahely scored 3-7 in the opening half as the young AGB side lacked composure on the ball. Despite some superb saves from Lauren Hayden between the posts for Arklow and Trojan work from the backline of Vivienne Walsh, Caoimhe Crowley, Clionadh Byrne, Katie Larkin, Paula Maher and Kirsty McCabe, the deficit at half time was 12 points. Annie Conroy, Aine O'Reilly and Chloe O'Reilly registered 4 points for AGB and despite many threatening runs from the forward line, including Sinead Arthur and Sarah Kendrick, the Tinahely keeper denied the home side several goal chances with some fine saves.
With a 12 point deficit to chase AGB came out battling in the second half. Claire Murray, Georgina Canavan and Jessica Hurley began to clean up around the centre of the park and AGB began to show their open passing game. Points from Aine O'Reilly (3), Jessica Hurley (1), Sinead Arthur (2) and Georgina Canavan (1) sent a clear signal that these girls weren't for giving up but the elusive goal needed to turn the tide evaded the Arklow forwards despite their very determined efforts. Tinahely registered just 2 points in the second half but they dug deep into their defence and would not allow the Arklow forwards through. The game ended on a score line of 0-11 to 3-9 in favour of Tinahely. Full credit is due to Tinahely for coming to Arklow and defeating this spirited AGB side on their home ground. For their part AGB will be delighted to have reached a Minor A final with a panel of U17 players and they will have learned a great deal from playing these superbly competitive games. They also have the luxury of a panel of 27 talented ladies, all of whom are doubly determined to contest this competition next season. AGB had great support at this game, as they do at all their games and having a large and dedicated background team working with them, the future looks very bright for this squad. So well done Tinahely and go AGB Ladies!
