Ladies: Gowna goals secure intermediate title

Our Lady of Lourdes Park in Mullahoran, played host to the Cavan Ladies Intermediate Football Final last Saturday evening. This final was wrapped up with eighteen minutes to go as Gowna's goal scoring ability punished Inny Gaels for squandering chances in the first half.

Gowna registered the first point of the game in the 7th minute Niamh Fitzpatrick kicking over a point from play, Inny Gaels took the lead and opened their scoring account in the 12th minute Una Galligan passing the ball across to Anne Clarke who finished the ball to the top right hand corner of the Gowna net, however Inny Gaels failed to score for a further twenty minutes as Gowna took the lead with points from play by Niamh Harton, Lisa Mulligan and Shauna Fitzpatrick, to give the team in green and red a one point advantage.

In the 32nd minute of the first half Inny Gaels' Neasa Byrd kicked the ball across to Karen O'Reilly who the ball over the bar and just before the half time whistle Aileen Gaffney fisted the ball out to Kate Clarke and she gave Inny Gaels a one point at the interval. Inny Gaels should have been further ahead at the break but they failed to convert the chances they had in the first half.

Inny Gaels got the opening point of the second half with Ciara O'Reilly's free going short to Karen O'Reilly who turned and kicked over a good point but this would be the last point that Inny Gaels would score in the final, as Gowna piled on the pressure.

In the space of eight minute Gowna's Emma Connolly kicked over four consecutive points all from play, in the 18th minute of the second hald Niamh Fitzpatrick kicked the ball across to Shauna Fitzpatrick who extended her sides lead to four.

A minute later the Gowna goal onslaught began, with a highball in towards the Inny Gaels large square for Emma Connolly to gather and she finished the ball low to the net.

This was followed up two minutes later Shauna Fitzpatrick making a good run and then she fisted the ball across to Bethany Houldsworth and she finished the ball to the net.

Six minutes before the final whistle Bethany Houldsworth gave a long ball to Shauna Fitzpatrick and she slotted the ball to the net and secure her side a thirteen point victory and the Intermediate title for 2011.

"It was very tough in the first half and we knew at half time that we hadn't started playing in the first half at all, we came out in the second half and we just started playing and when we got the first goal we knew that was it."
