Suncroft Ladies win U14 Division 3 League Final.

It was sunny but cold and breezy on Saturday morningwhen the Suncroft and Raheen U14 ladies got the day's events in Hawkfield off to a start at 10am (30 May 2015).

Suncroft made the first attack of them game and while they were forced back by a tough Raheens defence they persevered and Aislinn Dooley kicked over Suncroft's first point. Strong performances from Megan Troy and Aliya Jordan in the middle of the field made it difficult for Raheens to get the ball up to their forwards. On the few early occasions that Sophie Roker, Sally Kielty, Victoria Chanders and Grace Kielty did get past the Suncrofts midfield Eve Kehoe and Mary Enright cut out the ball before Raheens forwards could get on the ball. Suncrofts forwards were on form with Aisling Connolly and Aislinn Dooley putting two goals and another three points on the score board by the middle of the half. Raheens Aoife Kane was unlucky not to get on the score board early on but strong defending by Niamh Toft and Ciara Fennelly managed to stop her advances. A shot by Courtney Woods forced a good save from Risa Ennis in the Suncroft goal. Ennis got the ball out to Tara Sutton who cleared the ball up the field. At the other end Raheens Chloe Woodgate was under a lot of pressure and had made some good saves but Dooley managed to get another goal past her after picking up a loose ball after Anna O'Donovan blocked down a shot by Aine Troy. A few minutes later Danielle Nolan halted another Dooley attack but this time the ball came loose to Aine Troy who found the back of the net for Suncroft. Ciara Magner got on the end of the kick out and got the ball up to Rebecca Percival, Rebecca was held up by Caoimhe Doyle but managed to get her pass off to Kate McGovern who put Raheens on the scoreboard with a well taken point just before half time. Half time score was Suncroft 4:07, Raheens 0:01.

The second half was much tighter with Raheens making some switches and good use of their subs, Kate Byrne, Ellie Murphy and Chloe Byrne to slow down the Suncroft Girls. With help from Sinead Healion, Sadhbh Tully kept Suncrofts Aislinn Dooley fairly quite in the second half. Raheens Molly O'Brien was unlucky on a couple of occasions but she did make some good passes and helped Aoife Kane get another point for Raheens, a lovely looping shot off her left foot. Amy Brown broke down a high ball to Caoimhe Gilroy which she passed out to Aliya Jordan and Jordan pointed for Croft. Jennifer Harte couldn't get passed Danielle Nolan but got the ball out to Aine Troy who added a point to her earlier goal. Suncroft tried various changes and used all their subs, Eden Hurley, Ceile Hand, Michelle Kenny and Jane Magee, to get back on top. The second half was a very tight affair with the Croft only scoring a single point more than Raheens in the half (Suncroft 0:04, Raheens 0:03).

Both teams played some excellent football. Suncroft got the upper hand in the first half but Raheens showed Great Spirit and determination to take the game to Suncroft in the second half. Suncroft's centre half back and joint captain, Eve Kehoe, was the outstanding on the day. Any time a Suncroft player needed help anywhere on the field she was there. She fielded some great balls, made penetrating solo runs and her timing on interceptions was immaculate.

Final score: Suncroft 4:11, Raheens 0:04.

Lady Larries Retain U14 Title

Kildare U14 Division 1 Final
St. Laurence's 5-7 Maynooth 1-11

St. Laurence's U14 ladies retained their Kildare U14 title in a superb game against a quality Maynooth team. Twelve scores a piece indicates how close the game was, but goals were the difference. Vicky Bell, playing at corner forward, scored four first half goals to leave the lady Larries ahead at the break by six point, 4-2 to 1-5.

After the break, Maynooth took immediate control of the game, kicking three excellent points, to close the gap to a goal. But for some excellent defending by the lady Larries, Maynooth could have gone ahead. An excellent penalty save from captain Ciara Farrell, some key switches from the side line and a player of the game performance from Gillian Wheeler lifted St. Laurence's to ultimately see the game out. Two points each from Sophie Corcoran and Mia Ryan, one from Ciara Glynn and a cracking goal from Ellie Henry overturned the Maynooth comeback. The Lady Larries now move on to play in the Division 1 National Feile on 27th June.

St. Laurences; Ciara Farrell, Muireann Mulreid, Anna Howe, Danielle Mackey, Ellie O Brien, Ciara Glynn (0-1), Lorna Glynn, Ciara Downey, Gillian Wheeler, Naomi Cardiff, Sophie Corcoran (0-3), Ellie Henry (1-0), Nicola Lawler, Isobel Monaghan, Vicky Bell (4-0), Leah Molloy, Mia Ryan (0-3), Danielle Mackey, Roisin O Donnell, Doireann Halpin, Aoife Sweeney, Lucy Coller, Caitlin Meenehan & Molly Doyle.

Naas (2) v Rathangan
Div 4 final.

On a dry but windy day in Hawkfield the Naas girls were very nervous after they lost to Rathangan earlier in the league. Naas knew they would have to be at their very best to get a win against an excellent Rathangan team. It started well with Naas scoring 1-1 early on to settle the nerves. It was back and forth for a while after that in a very quick (but tough) tempo and some outstanding defending from Naas. Rathangan were kept at bay with some long range efforts however they kept plugging away and eventually got the scores that their play deserved with 2pts to reduce the deficit  and there was a goal apiece for both sides  before the break.

The second half started at the same fast pace as the 1st with both sides very evenly matched. Rathangan were trailing behind but they stepped up a gear to put on the pressure in the final 20 mins.  The Naas team defending was outstanding and the midfielders put in a really good shift and they held firm with the forward's working hard to defend from the front and chip away at the scores. Rathangan kept coming with some nice scores to keep it tight. The Naas keeper tipped the ball over the bar with 10 mins to go in what would have made it a 1pt game had it hit the back of the net. Naas went up the other end from the kick out to score a 1pt and made it 4pts in it only for Rathangan to get a goal back for a nervous 1pt lead for Naas and that's how it ended with a score line of 3-2 to 2-4. It was an tremendous game with two very skillful teams that have a very bright future in football.Commiserations to Rathangan and Congratulations to Naas in a hard fought but deserving win.Well done to both teams and management.

Caragh v Miltown U/12 at 11am in Caragh GFC on Saturday 30th May 2015

Ref: Ryan Lynam

The playing conditions were good. We played two 20 minutes a side.

Caragh had 11 players and Miltown had 14 players. Both teams had a nice mix of age groups. Both teams played 11 aside, with Miltown rotating players to give all girls a game.

The game started with both teams showing excellent defence and great skills were seen in midfield. Both Caragh and Miltown were strong in midfield. Caragh however took every opportunity to put the ball over the bar.
The second half Caragh took complete control of the game showing fantastic skill from backs, midfield to the full forward line and indeed creating many scoring chances.
Miltown had a great goalie who managed to save some brilliant shots. Miltown showed great determination and never gave up until the final whistle. Big well done to Miltown
The pace continued to increase throughout the game and both teams showed good blocking and tackling skills during the 40 minute game.

Match Report Blessington v Leixlip 28th May 2015

By Pat Travers

Leixlip Ladies under 12 footballers visited Blessington GAA for round 4 of the under 12 Spring football league on Thursday 28th May 2015.
The game was played as 11 a side on a full size pitch with the goals on the 20 metre lines.

The game was played in nice dry conditions but with a good breeze blowing the length of the pitch. Blessington got off to a fast start and played really well with Leixlip slow to get going.

As the second half developed Leixlip came more into the game and made good use of the advantage of the following breeze. There was great skill and commitment shown by both sets of players who gave everything. There was nothing between the sides at the end of the game.

Thanks to Niall Whiteley for his report.

This division 5 final was a great close game today, both teams knew from our 1st encounter that this was going to be a tight affair. Balyna started the stronger and took some good early scores to lead 2-1 to no score after 15 minutes, the Ellistown team switched on and with some well taken scores went in at half time a point up 2-2 to 2-1. The 2nd half started with a flurry of scores from both sides with some great build up play. Goals were going to be a telling factor in this game and Ellistown just seemed to be able to get them at vital points and led by 4 points with 5 minutes to go. The Balyna forwards worked very hard and got a vital goal with a minute to go, the Ellistown backs stood resolute for the last minutes and took the spoils on a scoreline of 6.01 to 4.06, This was a brilliant display of football from both teams with some excellent play from both sides. Well done to both teams on a great game, commiserations to Balyna on a gallant display and best of luck for the future.
