Ballyduff triumph in Kerry hurling decider
September 11, 2006
In one of the first county finals of the year, Ballyduff ended an 11-year wait for Kerry SHC honours when they defeated Causeway by 1-17 to 1-11 in an exciting contest at Austin Stack Park in Tralee.
Ballyduff trainer Mike Hennessy entered the fray in the closing stages and hit the insurance point with his first touch. Until then, the result had been in doubt with Ballyduff having seen their four-point lead whittled away by a spirited Causeway team.
After a keenly contested opening half, Ballyduff held a slender 0-8 to 0-7 lead. Points from Bobby O'Sullivan, Michael Boyle and Barry O'Grady made it 0-12 to 0-8 before John Joe Canty's goal brought Causeway level with three minutes remaining.
Stephen Goggin then edged the losers in front before Thomas O'Rourke blasted a goal at the other end to put Ballyduff on the road to a famous win.
