Munster U21FC: Holders dethroned
March 14, 2010
Kerry avenged last year's crushing defeat by Cork when they registered a comfortable victory over the reigning All-Ireland champions in yesterday's Cadbury Munster U21FC opener at Tralee.
Kerry 0-19
Cork 1-8
Meeting in the first round of the championship for the third year in-a-row, the arch-rivals were expected to serve up a close contest, but Kerry were always in control. Favoured by the wind in the opening half, they had built up a 0-10 to 1-4 lead by half-time thanks to some excellent point-taking by forwards Barry John Keane, Barry John Walsh and Paul Geaney.
Any hopes of a Cork comeback in the second half were dashed when further scores from Geaney, James O'Donoghue, Walsh and top-scorer Keane stretched the Kingdom's lead to six. The All-Ireland champions only scored once in 30 minutes before landing three points in injury-time.
Scorers - Kerry: BJ Keane 0-7 (2f); BJ Walsh 0-4 (1 '45, 2f); P Geaney 0-4 (1f); J O'Donoghue 0-3; P O'Donoghue 0-1; Cork: B O'Driscoll 1-2 (1f); C Sheehan 0-2; M Collins (f), J P Murphy, E Keane, J Sexton 0-1 each.
