NHL 4: Leitrim gain first points
March 14, 2010
Leitrim 3-15
South Down 3-10
A late 1-1 from Liam Burns secured a vital first win for Leitrim yesterday as they lifted themselves from the foot of Division Four after defeating South Down at Carrick-on-Shannon.
The visitors looked to be in for the points after scoring two goals early on via Michael McCartan and Liam Morgan, and despite Mark Hayes' late goal for Leitrim it was the Ulster side that lead by 2-4 to 1-4 at the end of the first-half.
Burns struck Leitrim's second major five minutes into the restart which was immediately cancelled-out by Paul Sheehan down the other end. That was followed by Leitrim defender Padraic McWeeney being given his marching orders.
The momentum seemed to be with South Down, but Leitrim never gave in and got their reward in injury-time when Burns would prove the hero and condemn South Down to stay bottom of the pile for another week.
