When the wrong county wins...

2008 was to see the introduction of a 9 team national hurling league division 1. Dublin who were outside the then protected 9 at the time in 2007 but caused an upset by securing a place in the 9 team Division 1 planned for '08. Offaly were the losers, heading for division 2 until intervention!

2009 - A county was to be relegated from the McCarthy Cup with the '09 Christy Cup winner set to take their place in '10. It'll be grand they said. Laois will be relegated they said! Low and behold Laois had the audacity to win a qualifier and avoid the relegation phase. Antrim and Wexford slipped into a relegation play-off until intervention! The relegation play-off never took place.

What's the story now in 2013? It'll be grand they said. Cork won't be relegated they said! What's next?!

The format for next year has already been changed, so this relegation play-off was kind of all the one. Unless I'm very much mistaken, 4 out of the 6 teams in 1b will get into the league quarter-finals anyway, so 1a or 1b, it won't matter much next year.
