I agree, Carlow are one county I would dearly love to see doing well, I was charmed in recent years when we improved greatly at the smallball, ok we didn't win an All-Ireland or Leinster but we're in far better shape than we were years ago, at least we're competitive now.

Keep the faith and more importantly, the strcutures!

Yeah what a breath of fresh air Carlow have been. With Mounth Leinster winning the Intermediate club AI last year , things are really looking up for Carlow hurling.

The more counties coming through the better. What is important to remember though is that this is only the league. If they are doing the same thing come Championship time then that will be real progress.

So much support on a cold monday !

We should have beaten Offaly yesterday and Wexford a few weeks ago but we're still learning how to finish
teams off at this level.

But its been encouraging so far.

Fair play to Carlow. They could well reach the Leinster semi-final this year. John Meyler is an excellent manager.

The hurling community in Carlow is very small, just MLR, Myshall, Naomh Brid, St Mullins and Erins Own supplying players to the team!
A lot of people have worked hard and the spirit in the hurling community is good. The team this year has been close but have not yet put points on the board. Wexford Limerick and Offaly were given close calls but ... we do need a win.

Development squads are working well but the lack of numbers has been offset by the determination engendered by the leading players on the field who are very determined to progress Carlow hurling.

A few years ago we deservedly beat Wexford which whetted the appetite of many in the county! A win brings a lot of attention but also a lot of enthusasm is engendered to go that one step further!

I wish Carlow the best of luck. I think they'll beat Antrim in a close one.

most of the hurling in Carlow is on the Wexford and Kilkenny borders.
i think they probably look at the league as their most likely source of progress and definitely eye up wins over Wexford/Limerick/Antrim/Offaly as the best place to start.as a result,I do think that they probably prepare for these games like the other counties prepare for championship games.
that is not in any way an attempt to pour cold water on their progress (look who started the thread),but I do think the next step for progress for them is to start performing in the summer.
having said that,I hope they stay in 1b and that is a mighty achievement for them and guarantees them 5 similar games next year.lets hope the progress continues.

Good to see Carlow doing well. Themselves and Kerry have had alot of great games over the years. Its also good to see that they have built on the Christy Ring Cup and minor & Under 21 ''B'' titles they have won in the last 5/6 years

waynol - I am sure that most would agree that football is the bigger sport judging by the number of clubs. There are only about 6 clubs playing adult hurling in the county, whereas there is a multiple of clubs in football. Hurling is played predominantly along the Wexford and Kilkenny border and one adult club in Carlow Town. About 2 secondary schools backbone the county hurlers.
The underage platform is stronger in hurling than in football. The key is that the hurling clubs have gotten over their rivalries and play as one for the county. The county hurlers have always gotten on better and play as one team when donning the jersey. Football club rivalries are there but no manager has succeeded in getting all the best players to play whereas the hurlers usually have most if not all the players togging out in the same dressing room. I think another difference is that the hurlers stay at the job, while the footballers over the past number of years have not stayed the county set ups.

So - the hurlers have shown remarkable improvement over the past 10 years and many would confidently assert that Carlow has had greater success in hurling than football. Still - the bigger sport from a fan base is football.

Going to a match is interesting in that there are hurling people who would never go to a football game and vice versa!
