Longford stunned
January 08, 2007
DIT 2-09
Longford 0-14
Any hopes that Longford had of picking up where the left off last season were dealt a blow at the Slashers Grounds when DIT recorded a one-point victory over Luke Dempsey's charges in the O'Byrne Cup.
Longford started the match in comfortable fashion, but were soon dealt their first blow when Kevin McMenamen scored the students opening goal after only eight minutes.
However, the home side still managed to hold onto the lead by half-time thanks mainly to the sharp shooting of veteran forward Padraic Davis who scored 0-9 in the match.
Meath star Cian Ward was his side's top scorer with 0-5 for the afternoon, but it was substitute Robert Dunne who was the hero for DIT as he scored the second goal late on to earn a surprise victory for the students.
