Derry Under 16's celebrate their All Ireland success
Derry retain All-Ireland U16B Camogie Title - Derry camogs lift second All-Ireland title in 7 days All-Ireland U16B Camogie Final Replay Derry 3-14 Waterford 2-2 Derry retained their All-Ireland U16 title on Saturday at St Peregrines Dublin, with a magnificent second half performance which blew Waterford away, making sure there was no repeat of the last encounter. Derry were not to be denied this time. With the county still buzzing after last Sunday's historic win over Clare, the U16 team got down to business, focusing on their All-Ireland Final replay against a strong Waterford side. Derry had looked to have it in the bag in the first game until Waterford hauled themselves back into contention late on. Donna McCloskey and her players had much to think about over the last six weeks, wavering between satisfaction with Derry's performance for much of the match and trepidation of having to meet a team who had finished so strong. But they trained hard to ensure that they would not make the same mistakes again. The sides were level at half time with a score line of 1-4 to 2-1 with Derry playing into the wind and it was the strong defending of Derry that held Waterford to only three scores that enabled them to go and attack in the second half with the wind are their back and amass a 15 point victory. In the last game Waterford's captain Trisha Jackman was their main threat but, with Derry's Keelin Bradley man-marking her and Michelle Rodgers picking up any loose ball, Waterford could not mount any real attacks on the Derry backs. The second half was all Derry, with the midfield pairing of Mc Kaigue and player of the match, Rodgers, dominating and supplying the forwards with excellent balls. Emma Mullally top scored with 2-4 and gave her corner back no respite with her driving runs. Eimear Mullan played in no less than three positions in the second half and looked comfortable in all of them and took two fine points from play. On the day, all of the Derry forwards played exceptionally well and never stopped working for each other until the final whistle. But as the president of the Camogie association, Liz Howard, remarked in her speech after the game, most people always look to the forwards for praise for winning games. However, in this case it was Derry's midfield and defence with their first half display that won the game for Derry. One of the Waterford mentors confessed after the game that they just did not create enough chances and scores in the first half. Congratulations to the players and management for such a fine display of camogie and commitment.
