McGrath goal sets a record
November 09, 2003
A second half goal from Eoin McGrath allied with a brilliant performance from Tony Browne earned Mount Sion a record 33rd Waterford SHC.
Mount Sion 1-14
Ballygunner 1-10
Waterford intercounty star Browne was in inspirational form at centre back, directing play for his side and ensuring that they were not going to be defeated in front of 5,000 spectators at the Walsh Park replay.
Ballygunner had the elements at their back and a goal from Shane O'Sullivan had them six points clear at the start of the second quarter, but Sion settled and trailed by just 0-8 to 1-7 at the interval.
Within nine minutes Sion were level and on 41-minutes they took the lead for the first time in the game. With ten minutes remaining the game was on a knife-edge but a long clearance from Brian Greene was picked up by McGrath and he blasted to the net to settle the match.
