Walsh, Tom

November 01, 2013
Dunnamaggin clubman and All Ireland winning defender, Thomas 'Tom' Walsh has passed away at Strathmore Lodge Nursing Home, Callan. Tom began his inter county career in 1951, when playing for the Kilkenny juniors on their way to an All-Ireland title. He added another junior medal to his collection when winning the All Ireland again in 1956. In that particular case, Tom played at right corner back beside his brother Jim "The Link" Walsh.
The pair assumed the same positions for the Kilkenny senior hurling team in 1957. Tom went on to win his only senior title that year, when beating Waterford in the final. Waterford gained revenge for that loss in 1959, when Tom and his Kilkenny said were defeated by the Deise in the All-Ireland final. Tom had a link to current Kilkenny defence, as he was granduncle to O'Loughlin Gaels centreback Brian Hogan. Tom was formerly of Green Street, Callan, and Ballintee, Dunamaggin. He is survived by his wife Anastatia, son John, daughters Anne and Mary, sons-in-law Ian, brother Pat, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grand-nephew, other relatives and friends.
