UCD win in extra-time
February 15, 2007
UCD made it through to the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup for the first time (0-9 to 0-8) in three years thanks to a point from Shane Lennon in extra time against St. Mary's Belfast.
In what was a keenly-fought affair at Belfield, the visitors were made to pay for some poor shooting which saw them record nine wides in the opening half.
Things improved for the northerners after the interval though, thanks in part to fine work by Antrim's Conor McGourty, and with 12 minutes left to play they led by 0-6 to 0-3.
However some strong play by John McCarthy (Limerick) and team captain Paddy Navin helped the hosts claw their way back into the match.
St. Mary's were still leading by 0-7 to 0-4 when UCD began their winning surge with points from James Brogan and two late Cathal O'Dwyer points to send the game into extra time.
UCD maintained their momentum and when match winner Lennon fired over his third point of the afternoon, it was game, set and match for the hosts.
