Cavan interest in ladies 'Underdogs' team
December 07, 2006
On Saturday night, 9th of December two local girls will be flying the Breffni flag when they line out for the TG4 Underdogs Ladies Football side against All-Ireland champions Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn, Cork at 7.45pm. The game will be shown live on TG4.
Since the trials process in May the Underdogs have faced vigorous mental and physical training, gruelling discipline and a ruthless elimination process. Their strength, stamina and skill has been tested by inter-county sides. They have faced every challenge head-on, honing their abilities, increasing their pace and cementing their bond.
Under the management of former Dublin All-Star midfielder Brian Mullins, the end result is a strong, fit, determined panel confident of taking on Cork in their own back yard. Among those on the underdogs side are Erne Gaels duo Laura Corrigan and Claire Kearns.
Looking ahead to Saturday night's game, Corrigan stated they had nothing to fear. "We are confident and we really have put in a lot of hard work and training while they have been sitting back since the All-Ireland.''
Alongside Corrigan will be clubmate and fellow county girl, Claire Kearns. The chance to be part of the Underdogs has given the Erne Gaels star a chance to prove herself, and she is really relishing the challenge. "Being part of the Underdogs has really improved every single part of my game"
Looking ahead to the game against the All-Ireland champions, Cork, Kearns just can't wait " we are going in with nothing really expected of us against a team as good as Cork. I just can't wait and hopefully I will be playing a part in it".
The game is televised 'live' on TG4 this Saturday evening, 9th of December, and no doubt there will be plenty of Cavan interest, tuning in to see how the local girls perform.
Incidentally, Laura Corrigan is daughter of well-known country and western singer, Ian himself a talented player with his home club, Drumlane. Her brothers are also members of the current Drumlane side that won promotion to Division One SFL football next season, and they are a family steeped in the GAA down the years.
No doubt, a number of supporters from the West Cavan area will be making the long journey to Cork this Saturday hoping to cheer on the Cavan players involved in this novel ladies football challenge.
