Johnny Nevin's amazing record

August 08, 2003
Carlow dual player Johnny Nevin must hold some sort of record for the amount of appearances he has made for his county. Amazingly, Nevin has played 296 competitive matches for his county at senior level - 161 with the footballers and 135 for the hurlers. Nevin's inter-county career commenced over 15 years ago on February 7, 1988 when he lined out at right half-forward for the footballers in a National League match against Limerick at Askeaton and scored a point. Since then he has played a further 160 games with the footballers and racked up the fabulous tally of 28 goals and 246 points. Nevin's career with the Carlow hurlers started when he came on as a substitute against Wicklow in the All-Ireland B Championship replay at Dr. Cullen Park in May, 1989 and his first start came in the opening round of the National League against Offaly at the same venue that autumn. All his football outings have been in forward positions, while most of the Old Leighlin clubman's hurling appearances were as a defender. Including hurling and football, Cork is the only county Nevin has not played against competitively at senior level.
