Cork GAA laments Kelleher passing
September 22, 2005
Cork GAA is in mourning following the sudden death of former football star Humphrey Kelleher. An All-Ireland SFC winner in 1973, Kelleher died suddenly at his home in Cork. He was 59.
The former tough-tackling defender was one of the best full-backs of his era but suffered illness in recent times.
However his death was unexpected and has left his family, friends and relations in deep shock.
Aside from his All-Ireland SFC winning medal, Humphrey Kelleher also won several Railway Cup medals with Munster.
However his proudest moment in his sparkling football career saw his play a huge role in Cork's annexation of the 1973 All-Ireland SFC title when the Munstermen blasted five goals past a shell-shocked Galway side.
The 1973 victory saw the Sam Maguire return to Leeside for the first time since 1945.
