Senior camogie Championship Final
August 18, 2008
The Senior Camogie Championship Final completed the afternoon's programme at Aughrim - Donard v Kiltegan.
For the past number of years the Senior title has been tossed back and forth by these two Clubs with Kiltegan taking last year's title by a one point margin after dramatic extra-time. On this occasion however, Donard took the field with only one result on their minds - the title would be theirs.
This game was never was never going to match last year's encounter for quality. From the start, the marking was tight and a clean shot was a rarity. Neither side could find their way onto the scoreboard. The rain which had miraculously stayed away all day arrived. After the excitment and quality of the play in the previous game this seemed a dull and dour encounter.
Eventually Donard's Sile Whelan put the ball over the bar to get the show on the road. Ann-Marie Doran scored Kiltegan's first point from a free and the sides were locked together again.
Late in the first half as Kiltegan stormed towards the Donard goal, the goalkeeper left her line, and with a body charge which some would say was not strictly within the law brought the attacker to the ground. The goalkeeper was yellow carded and indeed lucky to stay on the field but when Kiltegan wasted the resulting opportunity, it looked that this would be Donard's day if only they could score!
Along comes Donard Captain Karen Walsh with the elusive goal to leave the half-time score 1-1 to 0-1.
As the second half got underway Mary Whelan pointed for Donard and although Donard were tightly marked all round the field, Karen Walsh scored a second goal and Geraldine Norton popped over two points. Ann-Marie Doran was Kiltegan's only scorer with another pointed free in the second half.
Donard will not worry that this was not a classic game as they head on to represent Wicklow in Leinster competition. Congratulations to Donard on their victory and thanks to Kiltegan for the entertainment they have provided over the past few years.
This Kiltegan side was peppered with multiple Championship medal holders who are all top class players but on the day a determined and focused Donard side ensured they never got out of the blocks.
Trish Kehoe tried hard and with Mary Byrne and Olive Cashin as well as Ann-Marie Doran, Rosanna Keogh, Sinead Fisher and Sinead Kelly, we have not seen the end of Kiltegan.
Captain Karen Walsh, Geraldine Norton, Carmel and Mary Whelan, Lynsey Quinlan, Roisin Toomey and Sile Whelan caght the eye in a great team performance from Donard.
Final score Donard 2-4 Kiltegan 0-2
Referee: Justin Heffernan.
