Kilcoole Camogie Club News

Congratulations to our Under 14 players who, this week, brought the first juvenile Championship title back to Kilcoole since 1997, with an outstanding performance in the Final v. Aughrim. These players have over the past few years, been runners-up in both U14 and U12 Championships, 'A' and 'B', but this time were determined to take home the Cup and so they did.
The game opened with both sides giving as good as they got. It was soon clear that the action would be dictated from mid-field with our trio of Claire Foley, Erin Horan and Aisling McCabe fighting selflessly for every ball. Taking turns, they drove forwards at every opportunity. With Caressa O'Toole proving very effective at centre-forward with her fielding and as a pathway to the forwards the excitement mounted. Aughrim fought all the way and made all our players do the same.
Mairead Grennan at centre-back grew in stature as the game progressed and was a joy to watch as she outjumped her opponent on many occasions in the second half to come away with the ball and a long relieving clearance. Sarah Burke, who could have played in any position on the pitch, played a blinder at full-back and with Katie Merriman in goals proved difficult to get past. Defenders Keira Duggan and Ghislaine Murphy tackled decisively for every ball they cleared while at the other end, Caoimhe Dempsey and Sinead Kelly worked hard with full forward Darragh Lacey to give the Aughrim defenders a difficult time.
Katie Honan came on as a substitute and immediately caused havoc in the Aughrim defence with her 'never say die' approach. She soon had the ball in the net to put us on our way. Lia Reinhardt replaced the injured Sinead Kelly in the second half. Sarah Mcconnell and Sarah Gammell were the other substitutes while Amie Collier was absent due to holidays.
The tackling displayed by this team was top class with every ball contested. They hooked, blocked and chased from start to finish with everybody playing their part.
This victory was richly deserved and we congratulate them on making their own bit of history.
Final score: Kilcoole 3-3 Aughrim 1-3
Scorers for Kilcoole were: Aisling McCabe (1-3 2f), Erin Horan (1-0), Katie Honan (1-0)
Captain Sarah Burke was presented with the Cup by County Chairman Dave Murray amidst great excitement.
For Mairead Grennan the celebrations were put on hold as she was picked up by helicopter immediately after the presentation and rushed away to attend the premiere of 'Wild Child' in Cineworld, Parnell St in Dublin City centre. Having left the pitch in Avoca at 7.25 she had changed into her glamour gear and was taking her seat at 8.05 as Emma Roberts was taking hers. Its not only at centre-back that this girl can move!!
Well Done to Sarah Gammell who won Girl of the Camp at the Eire Og Cul Camp this week. This follows the awards won by our players at the Kilcoole Cul Camp the previous week when Karen Douglas won Girl of the Camp, Aoife Keddy was judged to be Most Valuable Player while Rachel Finnegan was Most Improved Player.
This weeks fixtures are: Wednesday : Under 16s at home v. Aughrim in the League at 7 and Friday: U12s play the semi-final of their 'B' Championship v. Glenealy in Bray Emmets at 6.30. We wish them well.
