Antrim Camogie Championship Final
October 25, 2010
Rossa too strong for Creggan
Rossa secured their eighth Senior Antrim Camogie title in convincing fashion at Randalstown this afternoon. Rossa were too strong for a spirited Creggan team who struggled all over the field to cope with the speed, anticipation and strength of this Rossa team.
From the start of the game Rossa drove forward purposefully from half back and midfield and were rewarded by two early Jane Adams points, one from a free. In the eighth minute Colleen Doherty ran through the Creggan defence and drove the ball to the net and this was followed a few minutes later by a Grainne Connolly goal after the Creggan defence had defended a Jane Adams free.
Creggan facing an eight point deficit in the first quarter of the game were finding it difficult to create any form of meaningful attack. Their defence was under constant pressure and had to wait for 15 minutes to register their first score from Shannon Graham.
This free settled Creggan a little and they began to hold their own, Shannon Graham and Grainne Connolly swapped frees and Rossa's Mairead Rainey managed a point. However when it appeared that Creggan were beginning to find some form they were hit by a third goal two minutes before half time from Grainne Connolly and with this went any faint hopes of recovery.
Half Time - Rossa 3-4 Creggan 0-2
Rossa started the second half as they did the first with two Jane Adams points, one from a free. They continued to dominate the game with further second half points from Caoimhe Quinn, Colleen Doherty, another Jane Adams free and two from Mairead Rainey. While Creggan replied with three second half points from Shannon Graham and two from Colleen McCann they never threatened the Rossa lead and Rossa ran out winners by 13 points.
Final Score - Rossa 3-11 Creggan 0-7
Rossa now look forward to an All Ireland Semi Final in the hope of repeating their All Ireland success of 2008. While Creggan will be disappointed with their performance they will learn from the experience and will strive to return a stronger team in 2011.
