Munster IHC: Limerick lift crown
July 24, 2008
Ciaran Carey
Limerick, with Ciaran Carey featuring prominently at full back, regained the Munster intermediate hurling title after a 10-year lapse with a four-point victory over Limerick at Semple Stadium last night.
Limerick..2-16
Tipperary....2-12
Having lost last year's decider to Waterford, Limerick were determined to go one better and wing forward Denis O'Connor led the way by scoring 0-6, 0-3 of which came from play. In fact, all six of their forwards got on the scoresheet as did midfielder Andrew Brennan.
Tipperary's star performer was right half forward and captain Noel Hogan who scored 2-5, but it wasn't enough to deny the visitors.
Limerick dominated the first half with David O'Neill's goal giving them a 1-7 to 0-2 lead after 18 minutes. However, Hogan replied two minutes later to leave Tipp trailing by 1-5 to 1-12 at the interval.
Tipp closed the gap to six points early in the second half before their comeback hopes were effectively ended by a second Limerick goal from Paudie McNamara. Hogan replied almost immediately with his second major, but the visitors held firm to claim provincial honours.
